Ten years ago, a group of improvisors from Improv Olympic and Second City, led by Bill Ivers, formed an ensemble named Effigy. Effigy played shows in random spots around Chicago. They were really good. Past president of the Playground, Doug Diefenbach, took one of the members of Effigy on a boat for a relaxing trip in Lake Michigan. Doug told Mike Higgins about this non-profit co-op theater he was forming, and asked, no begged, Mike to have Effigy join The Playground. Back then, The Playground wasn't a theater. It was a place to do shows. If you even mentioned the word theater, it would disappear. The Playground was at the now defunct Club Cue.
Fortunately for everyone, Effigy agreed to join, and decided to change the name to Homey Loves Chachi after a slight roster shakeup. We knew we had to dominate The Playground, and only the strongest survive. Homey prepared rigorously for each show. We ran 10k tagouts, lifted sweep edits, and took daily doses of character work.
Homey Loves Chachi stands overlooking the improv plateau like Mt Rushmore. We have seen teams come and go. We have seen all of the Playground spaces. We have done more roommate, teaching, and bishop/nun scenes than you can possibly imagine.
Homey Loves Chachi prides ourself in considering you lucky to be seeing our show. Our shit is funny, and we dominate you and your family.
